Fall Calendars in Leelanau: Northport, Suttons Bay and Leland

Labor Day is a common marker for the end of summer, but fall schedules vary across Leelanau County. Market and event dates vary by village.

This September, village calendars diverge. In Northport, the farmers market and Leelanau UnCaged have September dates. Twenty minutes south in Suttons Bay, the Saturday market runs through October 17.

Northport's September Calendar

Northport's Friday farmers market, set up across from the marina, closes for the season on September 18.

Eight days later, Leelanau UnCaged, now in its twelfth year, returns to downtown Northport on Saturday, September 26, with seven stages and more than 34 acts running at once. It opens with a Water Blessing at 11 a.m. at the Marina Pavilion, led by Anishinaabe Water Protectors from the Grand Traverse Band, followed by a procession into town and music starting at noon. The festival runs until 10 p.m., carried through the evening by Northport's eight bars and restaurants and more than a dozen food trucks brought in for the day.

The festival's own numbers put its annual cost at close to $60,000, covered entirely by merchant donations and patrons, since there's no ticket booth.

Suttons Bay Through October

Twenty minutes down M-22, the calendar tells a completely different story. Suttons Bay's Saturday market on St. Joseph Street runs through October 17, a full month past the day Northport's market shuts down. That's not a rounding difference. It's an entire extra month of Saturday mornings with vendors on the street.

As Leelanau Ticker reported, the Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay announced its "Live at the Bay" concert and event series for fall 2026.

The report also noted other local business changes. Grand Traverse Distillery, which had previously only kept a Leelanau presence in Leland, opened a new location in Suttons Bay this year and separately plans to reopen its Leland tasting room. The Flower Station, a Traverse City flower shop, took over the old Forget Me Not Florist storefront and moved into a space at 73 West Fourth Street near Hansen Foods, retaining the previous shop's phone number.

Leland Runs a Third Rhythm Entirely

Leland doesn't fit either pattern, and that's worth knowing too. There's no single blowout day and no month-long market extension. What Leland got this year was The Art Dock, a new gallery at 108 North Lake Street from Tyler Leipprandt, an aerial photographer, and his wife Rachel, a painter. Both spent years teaching before turning the space into a retail gallery, open daily from 10 to 6. It's a quieter kind of investment, steady rather than seasonal, and it's a reminder that "Leelanau slows down in fall" is really three separate stories depending on which village you mean.

What the Fall Calendars Mean for Residents

If you live here, the practical version is simple. Northport's farmers market closes September 18, and Leelanau UnCaged follows on September 26. Suttons Bay's Saturday market runs through October 17, and the Bay Theatre has announced its fall 2026 concert and event series.

There's one more date worth marking in September. The Leelanau Harvest Tour, a cycling tradition with routes of 18, 38, 56, and 70 miles, runs on September 12, cutting through roads that touch both village economies in September. The tour takes place before Northport's market closes and while Suttons Bay's market continues into October.

Fall calendars in Leelanau County vary by village, with September events in Northport and a Saturday market in Suttons Bay continuing into October.

If you're weighing what a specific pocket of Leelanau, Northport's fall calendar, Suttons Bay's longer season, or Leland's steadier one, might mean for a future move or a property you're already sitting on, The Trillium Partners spends its year in these villages, not just its Septembers.
